1. How to Make Funny | 9:00AM-11:30AM
Created for Disney Channel on-set coaching, this is John’s signature comedy course where he introduces the concept of creating a math to make people laugh! Students learn the rhythm to delivering successful one-liners, three-step jokes, and list building ideas. Also covered are 180 jokes (misdirections), where you learn how to create the set-up, follow with the reinforcement and land the 180 reversal. Students will also learn how simply substituting punctuation can change everything in comedy. Get ready to have your funny bone tickled and acting craft activated while learning the essential components of great comedic performance.

                                     Lunch | 11:30AM-12:00PM

2. Master the Disney/Nick Test Scene | 12:00PM-2:30PM
Disney and Nickelodeon have some of their best writers create test scenes that basically throw in “the kitchen sink!” In their own words, they’re looking for actors who can make the turns and locate the “funny” to deliver the role in a way that is not only funny, but puts their own personality DNA into it. They’re also looking for “aspirational kids” – kids that other kids would want to emulate. This challenges the actor to show off their skills in identifying the jokes, locating misdirections (the 180) and finding subtle and quirky ways to deliver them.  John has literally worked hundreds of these types of scenes in Los Angeles and around the country. There are essential formulas involved in the structure, and when a gifted actor instills their own DNA into the equation, magic can happen. This course will help actors identify the joke that the writers intended.  Be prepared to have fun and learn how to climb the three-step comedic ladder (triplet),  vocal manipulation, discoveries, dynamic entries and exits and more!

Magic Rectangle | 9:00AM-11:30AM
We are told that acting is best done “in the moment.” Yet, acting for the camera means that the moment must unfold within the eye of the camera or run the risk of not being seen. There’s not much value in a discovery that is not appreciated by an audience. De-mystify acting for the camera with John’s simple math for delivering dynamic and indelible on-camera performances. John’s simple camera math technique will immediately improve student’s taped auditions by imposing structure on the imaginary canvas of the fourth wall that exists around the camera. This is one of John’s signature classes that he has taught in Hollywood and across America. This course will apply John’s Magic Rectangle technique to each scene, exploring the physical and emotional values available on the 4th Wall. Get ready for your taped auditions to dramatically improve!

                                      Lunch | 11:30AM-12:00PM

Audition Technique & Self Tapes | 12:00PM-2:30PM
Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the audition process has changed and casting offices are very specific with how they want their submissions. If you fail to deliver what they’re asking for, your brilliant audition might not get seen. In addition to that, actors are auditioning less in person and more on tape with call-backs over ZOOM or some other virtual format.  John has been working with casting directors, producers, agents and managers to better understand what they are looking for in a great taped or virtual audition.  Backgrounds, lighting and wardrobe are more important than ever and how you deliver your performance must change according to the new technology. This class is essential training for the new requirements of auditioning for different platforms. Actors will get a complete understanding of what is expected of them from the live experience, the uploaded video audition and the virtual (ZOOM) call back.
