SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1ST

Booking The Disney & Nick Audition | Age Range: 7-13 | 9:30-11:30 AM
Disney and Nickelodeon require a special energy that is not only dynamic and lively, but is grounded in the show’s reality. Often, actors think this means to “overact” or “ham it up”. This is NOT the case! Learn how to build believable characters in the genre, identify specific characteristics of notable character tropes, and how to bring your authentic self to it!

Stranger Kids (Stranger Things, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Goosebumps) | Ages 7-13 |12-2 PM

Who stole the school mascot? Are there really ghosts in the Amityville Hotel? How did the cheerleader go missing? TV mysteries come in all kinds, shapes and sizes and many of them for kids!  This class focuses on preparing young actors for auditioning for television and film mysteries. Students will learn the archetypal characters in every cast, what is their function and how do they serve the story?  We will role play scenes with actors switching roles mid-scene. Join the fun and learn loads about how to make strong and specific choices in your auditions for TV MYSTERIES

Booking the One Hour Procedural | Ages 14+ | 2:30-4:30 PM

Are you the hero, the bad guy/bad gal or merely a red herring designed to misdirect the audience toward a false conclusion? Are you the reluctant hero, thrown into a world you never asked for?  Students will learn the dynamics of popular dramas, their genres and the formulas they follow. Working with scripts from iconic shows, actors will learn what producers are looking for so that you can deliver convincing performances that will bring your craft to a new level and increase your frequency of booking!

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2ND
 MASTERCLASSNailing the Comedic Audition | Ages 7-14 | 10:00 AM-2:00 PM
It all starts with a strong audition (usually an audition tape) that sends multiple messages: a) you can act b) you understand how to use the camera c) you know how to create a strong, funny and committed character and d) you know how to locate and deliver the jokes. All these elements are essential for a director to feel confident when hiring you. Simply put, they need to know that you can deliver when the cameras are rolling. This course will put you through the paces to make sure you’re ready for your next comedic audition!

Students will receive a scene to work on which will be performed and taped audition style during the Masterclass.

*Prerequisite required (see below). Cap at 14 students

MASTERCLASSExploring The Comedic Genres | Ages 14 – Young Adult | 2:30-6:30 PM

From Rom-Com to Sit-Com, Single-Cam to Dramedy (Oy, my head is spinning), there’s a lot to know about how to adjust your performance for each of those sub-genres. Despite having similar comedic rhythms and setups, each sub-genre has their own nuances and filming styles. In this masterclass, we will review each genre, showing scenes from popular comedies within the genre (Eighth Grade to Seinfeld and Modern Family to Grand Budapest Hotel and Abbott Elementary).

We will then dig deep within those scenes, specifically emphasizing the genre differences so that students can learn to identify and modify their performances. Having appeared in many of these styles throughout his career, John will share his on-set experience and wealth of comedic knowledge and insight as to best prepare YOU for your next comedic audition!

*Prerequisite required (see below). Cap at 14 students

*Prereq: Direct referral or a minimum of two classes taken with John previously for participating in either Masterclass. Saturday sessions of the same weekend will qualify as classes (if you are a more advanced actor and would like to take this session, you can also reach out to cj@theactory.com).
